Home Inspection – Sump Pumps

sump pumpThe light is at the end of the tunnel! The birds will soon be out, you wont be able to see your breath and water is coming to a basement near you. It is a great time to make sure your sump pump is in operating condition. Snow melt in March and April can quickly migrate into your drain tile system due to the ground being frozen still and not able to absorb moisture. ┬áMost pumps have a float valve that can be pulled up to make sure the unit turns on. Others have an interior float valve, for these fill a 5 gallon bucket and dump it into the sump basket till it turns on. You don’t want to wait till the basket is overflowing to find out your pump isn’t working. Your sump pump should be on a dedicated circuit so another appliance does not trip the breaker feeding the sump pump. Backflow preventers are also a good idea especially if you have a long run for the discharge pipe. This will keep discharged water from running back down the pipe into the basket.
