So there I am standing in the foyer of this 4000 sq ft rambler about to start my interior inspection of the home. I take off the boots, set them neatly on the rug so I dont get the snow and ice from a foot of melting snow in the yard all over the floor. And then… BEEP. My spirit sinks. I rub a finger against my temple…another home with low batteries in the smoke detectors! For the next 2 1/2 hours I get to hear the consistant BEEP of a smoke detector that is longing for some portable energy. I tried tempting it with a snickers bar but that had no effect on the little guy. BEEP… BEEP… BEEP. Ariving at the fact that this is what I get to listen to for the rest of the afternoon, suddenly a different BEEP. This one is coming from the security system. In some arenas this is called a Two-fer. And it is beeping at all the panels throughout the home. To top it off this one is at a slightly different interval than the smoke detectors. Some times they are BEEPs close together, and at other times one is from Venus and one is from Mars. I almost had that feeling when I left the home of when you get a off a boat after being on the water all day. You know the one, where you know you are on solid ground but your body feels like it is still in motion. So it’s kind of like the gift that keeps on giving. On the drive home at times I swear I could here a BEEP coming out of the radio here and there… probably just my imagination. But I am sure next week I will again be greeted at the door by that all too familar BEEP. I am seriously considering carrying some 9 volts to plug into these little devils on my inspections. I am sure when that light bulb goes off to go get that extra 9 volt I have in the car I will look up and see the smoke detector is at the top of a 14 ft vault just out of reach of the step ladder.
